Nerves Of The Norm

This installation looks at how images are formed and translated, from the mind into the hand.

The work is based on a street experiment, where people were asked to draw a horse from memory. Although the image in the mind often feels clear, it never fully translates onto paper. What becomes visible is not only a shift in the process of drawing, but also how the image itself is shaped by a shared visual norm.

Through animation and tactile materials, the work follows this movement between reference and image, showing how both what we see and what we make are influenced by learned visual frameworks, while leaving space for interpretation.

Developed in collaboration with Aniek de Boer, Pien Prins and Amé Schaake. Roles ranged from concept and research to animation and visual development.
